Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon - Institute of Coastal Systems - Analysis and Modeling

The Institute of Coastal Systems - Analysis and Modeling at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon works on the understanding on how physical, biological, chemical and socio-economic processes are shaping complex coastal systems and drive variability and change of coastal systems.

The common aim of the scientists is the assessment for current and future changes in coastal areas, thus creating a scientific basis for a sustainable and forward-looking coastal management.

Dr. Andreas Kannen
Leader work package 3

Andreas Kannen works on ecological and usage-oriented changes in coastal and marine areas from an institutional and socio-economic perspective. He focusses on the changed usage patterns in the oceans, the development of offshore wind energy, marine spatial planning and marine and coastal planning processes with their institutional structures. Of a special interest for him are temporal and spatial scales as well as different problem perspectives of stakeholders and transnational aspects of planning and actions.

Dr. Kira Gee

Kira Gee puts her research focus on marine spatial planning, especially on transnational aspects and conflicts of use. Above that, she deals with marine space as such, its perception by different stakeholders and individual sets of basic values connected to it. The basis of her work is formed by landscape theories ("seascapes"), cultural ecosystem services and planning theories.

Dr. Jürgen Schaper

Jürgen Schaper investigates social change and risk management processes with participatory involvement of regional actors in the context of climate change. His research interests focus on interpersonal communication, participatory governance and transdisciplinary forms of stakeholder participation, taking into account local stakeholder perspectives on regional climate adaptation.

Roland Cormier

Roland Cormier focusses on the assessment of fish stocks and marine environment as well as on coastal and marine management. He also works on risk management in ecosystem management approaches with the implementation of associated ISO standards and the integration of cultural ecosystem services into enviromental management.
